Our Registered Peer Recovery Specialists can be contracted for group or individual recovery services on an as needed basis. All of our peer recovery support services are facilitated by Registered Peer Recovery Specialists (RPRS). To earn this title, an individual goes through a rigorous process governed by the Virginia Board of Counseling and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). This means our peer recovery support services when "provided under the oversight of a Medicaid-enrolled provider or facility" are considered reimbursable. This reimbursement helps to offset the cost of our contracted services.
While our community SMART Recovery meetings remain free to the public, we also offer private, tailored facilitation services for organizations seeking structured support within their own facilities.
SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program is the organization’s flagship secular program serving those with addictive behaviors, including both substance and activity/process addictions. SMART Recovery offers a “4-Point Program” where certified facilitators lead effective mutual support group discussions on these topics:
Related tools consistent with evidence-based motivational and cognitive behavioral theories are also offered and discussed.
The SMART Recovery Successful Life Skills (SLS) program is a 12-session, evidence-based, self-empowering workbook program designed to help individuals overcome addictive behaviors and improve daily functioning. Derived from the InsideOut program for justice-involved individuals, it adapts SMART's 4-Point program with added practical skills for financial and career management.
Key Aspects of the Successful Life Skills Program
This program is a flexible, non-secular alternative to traditional 12-step programs, focusing on personal empowerment to move past self-destructive behaviors.
SMART Recovery Family & Friends is a secular mutual support program for family and friends of individuals with addictive behaviors. The program is based on the tools of SMART Recovery and Community Reinforcement Approach & Family Training (CRAFT). Studies have shown that CRAFT results in a significantly higher rate of treatment entry for Loved Ones than Al-Anon or Johnson Intervention. At our meetings, trained volunteer facilitators address specific issues encountered by family and friends of those with addictive behaviors. Tools consistent with evidence-based motivational and cognitive behavioral theories are also offered and discussed.
The Action Planning for Prevention and Recovery (APPR) is a self-care educational program developed by federal health agencies (SAMHSA) to help individuals navigate mental health and substance use challenges. In 2022, the program was customized specifically for the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide adults with practical skills and strategies for maintaining stability. As part of the program, participants receive their own workbook to keep, allowing them to personally document their "process of change." The ultimate goal is to empower people to improve their overall wellness, take charge of their own lives, and reach their full potential.
It is a common misconception that an Advance Directive (AD) is only for the elderly or the terminally ill. In reality, an AD is a gift of clarity you give to yourself and your family while you are thinking clearly and feeling well. In Virginia, organizations like Creative Recovery Virginia and Honoring Choices Virginia help people navigate this process, which essentially involves two main components: naming a Medical Surrogate (who speaks for you) and documenting your Healthcare Instructions (what you want to happen). Getting started with planning for future medical decisions can be the hardest step to overcome. The good news is that you don’t have to have all the answers to begin with, nor do you have to plan for every possibility! Thinking through a few questions and scenarios will help you convey to your loved ones what they’ll need to know if they ever need to speak on your behalf. Thinking about the care or interventions you DON’T want can be a simple place to begin. Schedule a meeting with one of our Certified Advance Directives Facilitators today!
